But we all make embarrassing decisions sometimes! Just OWN them! Thats part of life! I'm not going to tell my daughter to return something just to save my niece from embarrassment.
I dont think my daughter did anything wrong and I think both she and my niece are completely capable of resolving this themselves. I really don't want to get involved here. I told her that that was bullshit and that the necklace was her daughter's to do what she wanted and if she sold it for less than the value, its her choice. My sister then said that if my daughter were to keep it, she or I would have to give her another $20 because thats how much the necklace cost. But I told my sister that she bought it fair and square and I'm not going to tell her she has to return it. If my daughter somehow manipulated her into selling the necklace, I'd force her to return it in a heartbeat. I asked my sister if my daughter pressured her into taking the $30 for it and my sister admitted that she didn't. My sister and I argued about it and my sister called my daughter a "swindler", which I obviously did NOT appreciate so the conversation got very heated. But my position is that it is HER CALL to make. They're not little kids anymore and if my niece regrets her choice to sell, she can talk to my daughter about it and maybe my daughter will return it and maybe she won't. I said "no" because I strongly believe that this is not my place.
She asked me if I would have my daughter return it because my niece was "too embarrassed" to ask for it back from my daughter directly. I would be pissed too if my daughter sold a gift like that so I definitely sympathized with where she was coming from. Apparently, the necklace was a gift she gave her daughter. Later, my sister called and she was pissed. I'm not a jeweler but when she showed it to me, my reaction wasn't "You only paid $30 for that?!" It seemed right to me. My daughter asked my niece if she would be willing to sell it to her and my niece agreed to sell it for $30. Today, when I picked my daughter up from my sister's house, my daughter told me that when she was in my niece's room, she noticed a necklace, and told her how pretty it was. My daughter (14) and niece (14) are very close. I wasn't present when the sale occurred so my account of "the incident" is secondhand. The whole gist is basically the title but I'll provide some more context.
